Alexander County Schools Adopts Social-Emotional Learning Programs K-6

Meet-Up, buddy-up, harmony, or social-emotional learning are all terms associated with the adoption of Sanford Harmony, a social-emotional learning program for PK-6 grade students.

Through meet-up and buddy-up, students are given opportunities to collaborate, discuss, and share with classmates. Pictured are harmony goals that were created by consensus, signed by the students, and posted in classrooms at Hiddenite Elementary. Also pictured are students from Natalie Millsaps’ 5th-grade class at Sugar Loaf Elementary School. They are participating in a new-and-improved rendition of show and tell. The lesson is Activity 1.1 from Sanford Harmony, Who We Are. Students were asked to bring and share items of importance with classmates as a way of getting to know one another and building classroom community.

The curriculum addresses the district’s strategic plan seventh goal of emotional wellness for students and staff. At the heart of the curriculum is the concept that learning should not be limited to only core academics. The school system is dedicated to improving student outcomes and resilience by using a continuum of social-emotional and behavioral health supports.

Sandford Harmony is designed to foster communication, connection, and community both in and outside the classroom, and develop boys and girls into compassionate and caring adults. According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
