This is my second year at East, and my seventh year of teaching. I will be teaching 8th grade Social Studies. I previously taught in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Gaston County, and the public schools of Boston and New York City. Even though I am originally from North Carolina, I went to the City University of New York for a B.A. Economics, and to UMASS Boston for a M.A. in History. I previously worked in investment management for nearly a decade involved in trading, asset management, and financial planning.
Welcome to a new school year!
All updates and assignments will be shared on Google Classroom.
Social Studies lessons will be provided via video links. Q&A sessions will be via Zoom each day from 12-12:30
8th Grade Students,
This letter is to help you understand the scheduling and plan for online learning until we are back together in the building. To begin with, remember that Google Classroom and email are your “hubs” for communication with your teachers. Please check these daily as we will keep new information updated as much as possible through these channels.
Most of your assignments will be through Screencastify lessons and discussions on Google Classroom. Your math classes (and possibly some other classes) will meet through Zoom. The log-in and meeting information for these meetings will be communicated through Google Classroom or email.
Each of your teachers will also be holding “office hours” daily. During office hours, your teachers will be checking email and will be available for face-to-face Zoom calls. This will be a time to check in, ask questions, and just stay connected in the midst of this crazy time. The schedule below is what we will follow. You can send emails outside of office hours (and will probably receive answers), but the thirty minute daily time slot will guarantee you immediate access. If synchronous meetings are happening (everyone meeting online at the same time), it will be during the time slot for your subject area.
We are entering uncharted waters. We understand this is all new, unfamiliar, and a little crazy. Believe us when we say we are feeling exactly the same way. We will all be learning together through this time, so please be patient with us and we will do the same. Please take care of yourselves. Spend time with your family. Read and write, not just because your teachers told you to, but because it’s good for you. Go outside and move.
Remember that this time you are living through will be in history books eventually. You are living it. Remember The Diary of Anne Frank? She was just a kid, living through a moment that became a historical event. Write down your thoughts. Eventually someone will want to read them.
