General Licensure Information for Current Employees

Salary - Employees of the school system are paid according to salary schedules adopted by the State Board of Education. Teachers may receive their annual pay in either 10 or 12-month increments.

Local Supplements -Teachers receive a 6.0% supplement based on their annual salary.

Sick Leave - Teachers earn paid sick leave at the rate of one day per month of employment. Sick leave may accumulate indefinitely. In the event that sick leave days are exhausted, the superintendent may grant 20 additional sick leave days, during which time the teacher assumes the cost of the substitute’s pay which is fifty dollars per day.

Vacation/Annual Leave - Employees earn vacation days (annual leave) based on the number of years of state service. Employees with less than two years of state service earn 1 day per month; those with 20 years of service earn 2.15 days per month. Employees may accumulate up to 30 days of annual leave. Days over 30 are converted to sick leave on July 1 annually.

  Personal Leave - Classroom teachers and school media specialists who require a substitute earn two days of personal leave per year. On June 30, accumulated personal leave in excess of five days will be converted to sick leave. Personal leave may be requested by application in accordance with the policies of the State Board of Education.

Holidays - Employees are granted paid days off for holidays that occur within the period. Holidays are as follows: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Holiday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving (2 days), and Christmas (3 days).

  Hospitalization Insurance - The State of North Carolina Insurance Plans cover full-time employees at no cost to employees. Members of the employee’s family may be covered under the same policy provided the employee pays additional costs. Prescription drug co-payments are available. State Salary Schedules

Background Investigations Bureau (BIB)

Background Investigation Bureau offers an on-going, automated criminal record check for each staff member via their Guardian System. This system will automatically check criminal records from each specified state and notify the Alexander County Schools Human Resources Department of any recent criminal activity by any staff member. Through the BIB.com website, the Alexander County Schools Human Resources Department will be able to view and print the details of each criminal court case. Search results will be available online for up to 10 days from the date of discovery. The Alexander County Schools Human Resources Department works everyday to ensure our school system is a desirable and safe place to work and learn.
