What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway recognized by the state of North Carolina. It allows employers to develop and prepare their future workforce while individuals gain the skills needed for long-term career success. Apprenticeships combine paid, on-the-job training, related classroom instruction, and hands-on experience, leading to a portable, nationally recognized credential.

Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships provide meaningful learning experiences that connect education directly to career opportunities in North Carolina’s high-demand industries.

  • Earn While You Learn
Most employers pay pre-apprentices, allowing participants to gain valuable experience while earning an income.

  • Tuition-Free College Credit
Participation in a Registered Pre-Apprenticeship can help eligible high school students qualify for the North Carolina tuition waiver, making college coursework more accessible.

  • Foundational Credential
Students who complete a Registered Pre-Apprenticeship earn a certificate that recognizes their achievement and foundational skill development.

  • Hands-On Experience
Participants learn in real-world or simulated environments while working alongside industry professionals.

  • Pathway to Registered Apprenticeship
Completing a Registered Pre-Apprenticeship improves a student’s eligibility and competitiveness for selection into a Registered Apprenticeship, which can lead to full-time employment.
