  • Little Read Event Planned

    Join Alexander County Schools’ First Graders and Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Hefner at Lenoir-Rhyne University on April 1 at noon to meet Dan Santat, author of The Adventures of Beekle, The Unimaginary Friend at this years’ Little Read Event. The event will take place in and around PE Monroe Auditorium on Lenoir-Rhyne’s Campus. Three winners from each of elementary school in both art and literature will be recognized on the stage. Mr. Santat and Dr. Hefner will recognize the overall district winner of the literature contest. All participating school system winners will also be recognized. Mr. Santat will speak about writing and illustrating Beekle. Beginning at 1:00 p.m. guests will be able to purchase more books and have books signed by Mr. Santat while young ones can participate in activities including a make your own “Unimaginary Friend” activity. The afternoon will end with the final performance of a play about Beekle written and performed by Lenoir-Rhyne’s Playmakers at 2:00 p.m.

  • EAMS Wins Middle School Battle of the Books

    The Alexander County Middle School Battle of the Books was held Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Alexander Central Auditorium where East Alexander Middle School emerged as the winner. The competition was close with East Alexander winning by only 3 questions. The final score was 158 – East Alexander Middle School over 149 – West Alexander Middle School. The competition consisted of 10 rounds. The content-based questions were from a selection of books the students read for the competition. The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary and middle school levels. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. East Alexander Middle School students will compete in the regional middle school competition on March 30 at the United Methodist Church.

  • Bethlehem Wins Elementary School Battle of the Books

    The Alexander County Elementary Battle of the Books was held Wednesday, March 15, 2017 with all seven elementary schools participating. Bethlehem Elementary School took top honors scoring over 100 points. The competition consisted of 7 rounds of 12 questions each round. The content-based questions were from a selection of books the students read for the competition. The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary and middle school levels. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Bethlehem Elementary students will compete in the regional elementary competition on April 27 at 9:30 a.m. in Hickory at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
