Wow! Summer was over very quickly.  I hope everyone enjoyed having your children home and had some quality family time.  As a new year begins for Alexander County Schools, the AIG Program has a new beginning.  With the implementation of the new plan, the program is set to grow each of the next three years.  Some changes will be slow and some will start right away.  One of the changes that many will see immediately is the implementation of the new Differentiated Education Plans for grades 4-6.  Eventually these will grow to grades 4-8.  If your child was identified last year as a 4th grader, you will be receiving a DEP for 4-5 sometime during the first month of school.  New 6th graders will receive a DEP for 6-8 sometime during the first month.

Please sign a copy and send it back and keep one for your records.  Each school may meet this plan in their own way.  Keeping open communication with your child’s teacher(s) and principal is important.  As always please feel free to contact me as well.

Newly identified students will be receiving a letter with Identification Records and DEP enclosed.  Please send the signed documents back to your child’s teacher who will forward to me or send it straight to me here in central office.  If you have time to stop by the office, I always love to meet parents and to discuss the growing opportunities here at Alexander County Schools.

Speaking of opportunities, check out the webpage and facebook soon for pictures of our new North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) classes at ACHS.  The first one in Aeronautical Engineering starts September 1st and the second semester will bring Forensic Science.  We also have several students attending NCSSM online while still here at our school.  The Early College Owls have already been working hard since September 2nd and have started their first college course.

The last item I want to discuss in this first post is a survey of parents to help drive opportunities and the implementation of the new plan.  A link to the survey will be posted on this website during September and October.  I will also mail the survey out to any parent’s emails I have.  If you would like to be on my email list, just email me with AIG Parent of ________as the subject and I will add you.
