    N.C. Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System: Permanent full-time* employees are automatically enrolled in the N.C. Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System. Employees are currently required to contribute a mandatory 6% on a pre-tax basis. Employees cannot increase or decrease this percentage. After five years of contributory service, an employee is vested. Fringe benefits of this retirement system include a death benefit and short-term disability benefits after just one year of contributory service and long-term disability after five years of contributory service ( Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement Handbook ) Be sure to designate a beneficiary (Beneficiary designation)
